Warner Bros. has been sitting on their rights to produce a live action film adaptation of Tite Kubo‘s manga/anime, Bleach, for quite some time. But it looks like things are actually moving ahead now!
Dan Mazeau (Wrath of the Titans) will be writing the screenplay and Peter Segal (Nutty Professor 2, Get Smart) will be producing it. He might end up directing it, but that will probably not work in this film’s favor so here’s hoping that doesn’t happen.
The fact that Warner Bros. has taken up this project is also quite worrisome because they seem to be having trouble getting these Japanese anime endeavors off the ground. They slashed the budget for Akira in half and that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere at the moment.
For those of you (like myself) who haven’t had much exposure with this series, here’s what Wikipedia has to say:
Bleach (ブリーチ Burīchi?, romanized as BLEACH in Japan) is a Japaneseshōnen manga series written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. Bleach follows the adventures of Ichigo Kurosaki after he obtains the powers of a Soul Reaper (死神Shinigami?, literally, “Death God“) —a death personification similar to the Grim Reaper—from another Soul Reaper, Rukia Kuchiki. His newfound powers force him to take on the duties of defending humans from evil spirits and guiding departed souls to the afterlife.
I can see why this is such a popular series in Japan and around the world. I hope they don’t fuck this up like Fox did with Dragon Ball: Evolution... That is, if this thing even gets off the ground.
