Brett Ratner‘s attempt at a Hercules film didn’t work out with Millennium/Nu Image a few years ago, but now he’s back at it with MGM and it looks like this time they’re going places. They’ve been in talks with Dwayne Johnston (the fuckin’ Rock!) about starring in the adaptation of Steve Moore‘s graphic novel, Hercules: The Thracian Wars.
This will be an interesting take on the character, seeing as what we currently have on film is all happy-go-lucky-Disney type stuff; Moore’s Hercules is a tortured soul yearning for some sort of redemption. The screenplay has been written by Ryan Condal, who also wrote Paradise Lost.
I haven’t read the graphic novel, but it does sound like an interesting premise. I’m skeptical about the potential quality of the film seeing as The Rock is always an awesome addition but that obviously doesn’t say anything about it being any good. Ratner’s other work (Rush Hour 2, X-Men 3) have been woefully substandard (although Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker are always fun to watch) so his past work doesn’t give us much indication about his ability to do well with this project. We’ll just have to see. I’m willing to give this the benefit of the doubt (and I may regret it, but whatever).
