While The Avengers won’t release for another five weeks (Yeah, I know only five weeks away, woot!) that hasn’t slowed production on sequels for the Iron Man, Captain America and Thor franchises. Today we learned who’s on the shortlist for directing Captain America 2 and a few of the names might surprise you. In the running are, “George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau), F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job), and Anthony and Joseph Russo, who made Welcome to Collinwood, and are perhaps better known for working as producer/directors on Community.” I think I know who I’d be interested in seeing direct Cap 2, and they hail from a little college called Greendale.

I enjoyed The Adjustment Bureau and Nolfi deftly handled the chase and actions scenes in the script, even if it’s one of those movies that’s hard to enjoy through multiple viewings. F. Gary Gray has been behind quite a few good but not necessarily memorable action flicks, and he’s known for making a, “commercially viable product on schedule and at or under budget,” which might the qualities you look for in a sequel director. But in the end, I think the Russo brothers would be the most daring choice and the one that would deliver the best payback in the end. We want a sequel to not only be better, but different. Think about Iron Man 2, it was a lot of the same and that “sameness” didn’t shine as brightly the second time around.

It’s good news for me then that the Russo brothers, according to Vulture, did very well in their meeting with producer, Kevin Feige. A good impression could mean a lot more than what’s on their resume. But what it really comes down to when picking a director is what kind of story will Captain America 2 be telling? Will it post-Avengers? Will it have moments in WWII? Could the whole movie be set in the past and take place somewhere within the first Captain America? Who knows!?! With the script still getting worked on by Chris Markus and Stephen McFeely it’s up in the air as to what direction a sequel will explore.

So, ya bastards, what do you want from Captain America 2? Where do you think Cap should go or who should he face? Then, who’s the director for the job?
