While filming has been underway for some time on Star Trek 2 and we’ve seen quite a few leaked set photos we still don’t know much about what’s happening in the sequel. And we’ve had almost no news since J.J. Abrams erected that wall around set. Producer/writer Alex Kurtzman doesn’t really spill anything of significance, but I just couldn’t help sharing the few tidbits he does mention as well as the glowing praise he has for Benedict Cumberbatch.
Good progress is being made on the sequel and Kurtzman says things are going “unbelievably well” and the “finish line is in sight.” Which I take as really good news because maybe, just maybe, we’ll have a teaser or something in theatres this summer! And what could such footage be teasing? Kurtzman talks a little about what we can expect, and it’s mostly spoiler free,
Without spoiling anything, the challenge is that you don’t want to jump too far ahead and assume that just because they got together they’re all comfortable with each other. They’re still all working out their kinks and still becoming the bridge crew that we remember from the series. That’s still very much alive and look, any good sequel is about the challenge that the group faces in order to become the unified team and I think that that challenge in this movie is going to be hopefully amazing.
I though the cast did a great job of coming together as team in the final moments of Star Trek, but I like the idea that while a team they are totally unified they are not, and it’ll be great to have the sequel explore that.
Now for the most important bit here, at least to this raving, Cumberbatch fangirl, what does Kurtzman have to say about Cumberbatch and his turn as the movie’s as-of-yet unnamed villain?
He’s incredible. What he does with language is incredible. His training is amazing and he’s so magnetic, he holds the screen in any size frame, he really is a joy to watch.
Yes, yes he is. I know finally seeing footage of what Cumberbatch is doing as the villain is number one on my list of must sees for a teaser trailer, so hearing he’s been simply marvelous is awesome. This praise combined with that wild looking fight scene he and Zachary Quinto were filming has me thinking he’ll be one hell of villain. I cannot wait to see it!
So I’m totally pumped for Star Trek 2 and its release couldn’t get here any sooner. What do you bastards think about what Kurtzman had to say?
