Disney, the studio that’s been making movies about princesses for years, may finally be exploring the “dark side” of their universe with Maleficent. Starring Angelina Jolie, the film is a re-telling of the fairytale classic Sleeping Beauty from the viewpoint of the evil fairy Maleficent, hence the name. Duh.
The film will be a first for visual effects artist Robert Stromberg, who is taking over for former director Tim Burton after he left to persue Dark Shadows. Because it is the first time that Stromberg will be wielding the power of the director’s chair, it might take a while to shoot. With a story that’s told from the vantage point of the villain and what led her to curse Princess Aurora, this live-action adaptation is projected for a March 14th, 2014 release.
Although waiting just shy of two years feels like an eternity, it’s nothing compared to the wait we’ve already had for Orsen Scott Card‘s Ender’s Game. And it’s going to be just a tad longer – find out why after the jump.
Even with Ender’s Game stars Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, Hailee Steinfeld, and Abigail Breslin already prepped for their roles in the long awaited live-action adaptation, it’s sadly going to be a little while longer until we see results.
Originally promising a March 15th, 2013 release, director Gavin Hood has unfortunately had to push it back until November 1st, 2013. Now, before fans start bitching that Ender’s Game may become the Duke Nukem of movies, they should know it’s not like the guy isn’t trying.
Until then, don’t start freaking out until the studio starts delaying the film into 2014.
