Get this this, we got a call from Captain Obvious and he told us that Disney is developing a sequel to The Avengers. No way! Really? Gee willikers, who’d thunk?
Alright, so my sarcasm is a little unnecessary, but I think we all knew Disney/Marvel studio would immediately green light a sequel to the super hero tour de force that is The Avengers. I mean come on, if those post credits didn’t imply a planned sequel, then the film’s record-breaking box office sales this past weekend sure did.
Disney CEO Bob Iger made the announcement. Saying the film’s success “is a great illustration of why we like Marvel so much.” Demand for Avengers merchandise has been strong, he added.
It will be a while before we hear any cast announcements, though most of the core cast of the first film will be signed for a potential sequel. I really just hope they bring Joss Whedon back to direct. His vision and direction are the reason The Avengers was so good. Well, that and the word of mouth its gotten about how entertaining and fun and funny it is. Plus, the villain at the post credit was his idea. I think Whedon would want control of that.
Anyhow, when can we expect the sequel? Probably not until 2015. Marvel has to get Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2 and another mystery film (perhaps Ant-Man) out of the way first.
