After much anticipation from fans world-wide, it looks like production will finally begin on the third film in what is affectionately known as the “Blood and Ice Cream” trilogy – The World’s End. The new project will bring back the same crew, with Edgar Wright in the director’s chair and Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in starring roles.
While Shaun of the Dead took a stab at zombie flicks and Hot Fuzz toyed around with the action genre, The World’s End is expected to address the pertinent issues in… well, we’re not quite sure yet.
From the name, one could expect any number of similarly themed ideas, from alien invasion to post-apocalyptic to disaster film. The plot summary, what little was given, is rather vague in presenting fans with the information they need to make that assessment.
Consider the following:
20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.
So, we know it’s about drinking at least. And 40-somethings. Considering that Wright and Pegg wrote the script, it’s likely to be a mish-mosh of aliens, disasters and nuclear war all rolled into one.
Personally, I wasn’t a huge fan of the first two films, though they were certainly entertaining. I am pretty eager to see what they manage to pull off this time around, however, and I’m guessing their cultish followers are as well.
Filming is expected to start this September with a likely release date (if everything goes according to schedule) of Spring 2013.
Thanks to slashfilm for the heads-up.
