We’ve had mixed responses about the upcoming RoboCop remake by Jose Padilha, and for good reason. But that might change following today’s announcement that Gary Oldman will be taking on one of the lead roles in the film alongside Joel Kinnaman (who is playing the new Alex Murphy).
It turns out that he’ll be playing a character that was not in the original film, rather than one of the classic roles we’d have assumed he was offered. So this gives us a bit of insight into how they’ll be approaching the remake.
Oldman will be playing Norton, the dude who creates RoboCop. This is an interesting revelation because the original film downplayed the role of the scientists who created RoboCop and got on with the rest of it.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Norton is:
The scientist who creates Robocop and finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous needs of a corporation.
This is an interesting addition, and we’ll have to wait and see how well they execute it. Filming hasn’t started yet, but they’re looking to do that in Toronto at some point soon (perhaps I’ll go and be a troll!) and the release date still hasn’t been announced.
What are you guys thinking? Does this new tidbit affect your previous opinion about this movie?
