All attention is on J.J. Abrams’ rebooted Star Trek and it’s forthcoming sequel, but there are still many, interesting areas of Trek universe that can be explored in new TV and film projects, and it seems that one former Trek actor looks to be trying to take advantage of the possibilities.
Now you all remember Michael Dorn. He played Klingon officer Worf on seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation and for four seasons on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as well as appearing in four Star Trek movies. Well it seems that Dorn is in the process of putting together a new solo adventure for Worf, according to an interview with Trek Movie.
According to Dorn, the film be low-budget and will feature a new adventure with Worf in the captain’s chair of his own Federation starship. Dorn is writing the script himself and says that his take on the story will be a little darker, and a little edgier.
“He is out there in the front lines basically chasing terrorists,” Dorn said. “I think we will have some of our Star Trek people in it, but mostly new characters. It will be interwoven into the fabric of Star Trek. And also what are we going through right now?”
As for whether or not a Worf movie might sideline some of the hype on Trek 2, Dorn says that all hype is good hype.
“Who wouldn’t want to have this kind of thing going on? It is going to help their movie. The fans aren’t going ‘We are going to see this movie, but we aren’t going to go see the big movie in the theater,’” he said. “I have [a] couple meetings I want to do before [meeting with CBS]. First with Rick Berman, who produced all of our shows, just to see what he thinks. Then my manager. And I know people at Syfy. And I’ll just start gathering information. If anything happens it is going to be next year, because I have a bunch of stuff to do this year. I have already started writing the script, and excuse my language, but it’s @#$!-ing great.”
This comes on the heels of news that Dorn was actually almost a part of Abrams’ sequel. Here’s a relevant clip from Comic Book Movie:
Yep. I don’t know what the role was. They called in November or December of last year and said “hey, we would like to know if Michael is interested in playing a part of an officer – a soldier.” And we said “yes.” Then time went by and we finally talked to them at maybe the end of January or February and they said they had changed their mind and that’s as far as it went?
Well, it’s too bad that didn’t work, but still, I won’t mind seeing a Worf movie on TV, at the theater or on home video. Worf was one of the great characters from TNG, and his time on DS9 only enhanced his character taking Worf in some compelling new directions by making him a command officer, then marrying him to fellow crew member Jadzia Dax, and then having him end the series on his way to the Klingon homeworld to be Federation ambassador. I’ve always thought that they did the character an injustice by just having back on the bridge of the Enterprise in Star Trek: Nemesis, without a word.
How about you Bastards? Dying for a Worf movie?
