The Hollywood Reporter broke news today that the production of Alan Taylor‘s Thor 2 will be making an adjustment to the cast. Zachary Levi, the star of the cult TV show Chuck, is in negotiations to play Fandral, one of the Warriors Three. If memory serves you right, Josh Dallas played the part in the first film. If you have a shitty memory or don’t know who Fandral is, he was the sword swinging white dude that fought/acted like a “Sir!”. Why the change? Dallas now stars on ABC’s hit show Once Upon a Time and cannot give up that bread and butter in favor of Thor 2. This is actually kind of funny, because Levi was reportedly first cast as Fandral in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor but his show Chuck got picked up for another season and couldn’t commit. See how it’s all reversed now?
Levi’s casting is not official yet. He’s in the earliest stages of an offer, but an offer will be made, and likely accepted.
Personally, I think Levi is great. He won me over playing the twenty-something computer geek turned government asset in Chuck. However, I don’t think he could bring the smolder as Fandral. Seriously, the character is supposed to be an irrepressible swashbuckler and romantic. Levi is considerably less dashing than the role requires. I think Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood) or Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) would be better suited.
What say you? Good casting choice, or is Levi too type-cast as a geek to be taken seriously? Sound off in the comments below.
Thor 2 will return stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba and Anthony Hopkins along with Mads Mikkelsen as a yet-to-be-determined villain. Shooting is hoped to start next month with an intended November 8, 2013 release date.
