We’ve had a lot of comic book films with interwoven narratives lately, particularly with The Avengers and all of the individual character films. We’ve also heard recently that there will be a Justice League movie in the works.
Hollywood.com spoke with the producers of The Amazing Spider-Man, Avi Arad and Matthew Tolmach about the future of their films, and it seems that Marvel’s intention is to eventually have all of their films overlapping with one another so that they all live, breathe and play in the same ‘verse.
According to Tolmach:
What I’m trying to say to you without giving anything away is hopefully all these worlds will live together in peace someday.
There have been rumors of a Venom movie in the works, potentially directed by Josh Trank (Chronicle). Sony’s version of Eddie Brock will be as true to the comics as possible and will continue on the same wavelength that the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man flick is on.
In Arad’s words:
It’s an Eddie Brock story. We want to be as close to the comics as possible. Especially in Eddie Brock’s story. But again, pseudo-sceince is becoming science. All these tidbits about webs, artificial webs, is a huge industry now. Spiderwebs have unique qualities that will be huge for communications, fibers, and so forth. So we have taken the approach that we want to make the huge amazing movie about Eddie.
And Tolman added:
He was a journalist. He had the wrong story, he got in trouble for it, he got fired,” explains Tolmach, who also went on to describe his and Arad’s approach to adapting Marvel properties. The whole essence to us for the Marvel characters. Stay close to the bible, stay close to the emotional story, and the rest is fun.
The studios may have already planned some sort of overlaps with the upcoming Spider-Man film, because Tolman mentioned in the interview that the audience should “look for the worlds to make sense with one another”, so I imagine that they kept that intention in mind while developing the first story.
What do you guys think about this? Not just having a Venom-centric film, but also having the Marvel ‘verse tied together across film reels.
