Don’t know about you guys, but I’m really, really excited for Maleficant starring Angelina Jolie. I know we’re all a little fairy-taled out right now, but an origin story of a classic fairy tale villain sounds faaaaar more interesting than remaking, say, Snow White for the umpteenth time. Look at the book/stage musical, Wicked which explores the secret history of the Wicked Witch of the West. Yeah, you know Disney was eyeing the piles of money that property made when they were dreaming up Maleficant.
Maleficant is being directed by Robert Stromberg, traditionally a visual effects artist and also stars Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville. The film will reveal what happened to Maleficant that turned her into the hardened bitch who curses little baby, Aurora in Sleeping Beauty. In a previous interview Jolie had this to say about the flick and her role in it,
It’s not anti-princess, but it’s the first time they’re looking at this epic woman. I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn’t mean she can’t have other [warmer] qualities.
It sounds really crazy to say that there will be something that’s good for young girls in this, because it sounds like you’re saying they should be a villain. [Maleficent] is actually a great person. But she’s not perfect. She’s far from perfect.
In general, it’s a very good message to say, “Let’s look at something from the other side.” But then also, what our challenge will be – and the script writer [The Lion King and Alice in Wonderland’s Linda Woolverton] has already cracked it – is not to simplify it, not to just reverse the story but tell a bigger story that doesn’t point the finger [at Princess Aurora] either.
These new set pics comes courtesy of the Daily Mail and Rumorfix and while they’re that lovely, grainy quality we’ve come to love from leaked set pics, they do show Jolie flying around. So, that’s pretty cool. Check ‘em all out in the gallery below.
Jolie just looks so good as Maleficant. Never would I have picked her for the role were I casting, but man, with one promotional image and this slew of on set pics, I’m a fan. Considering Charlize Theron’s Evil Queen was the highlight of Snow White and the Huntsman, I think the time of the villainess has come and Jolie’s going to own.
Are you excited for Maleficant, set to release March 14th, 2013? Was a Jolie a good choice for the classic Disney villain?
