Marvel Destroys Suspension of Disbelief Once Again – The Return of Jean Grey?

The world of comic book integrity has taken a beating over the years as both DC and Marvel have seen fit to kill characters off and then revive them whenever they look like they could be reused to sell more issues.  This week’s “deus ex machina” award is going to Marvel, as they attempt to bring Jean Grey back from the dead… Again.

For those that don’t know the story of Jean Grey, she’s been killed off twice already.  Once, during the “Dark Phoenix Saga,” she sacrificed herself to save the universe.  Apparently, Marvel didn’t see her sacrifice as being worthy, so they decided to bring her back with the release of their X-Factor series.  Then, in 2004, they offed her again.  Rumors are flying that the end of the Avengers vs. X-Men series will see one more resurrection of Grey, though sporting her original Marvel Girl look.  The AvX is convenient timing for a return, given Jean’s intimate connection to the wholePhoenix thing.

The following art work by Joe Quesada is being circulated as a teaser:

Rumor further has it that Marvel will be making their official announcement about the event during Comic-Con – tomorrow, in fact.  So check back with us in a day and see what the powers-that-be had to say.
