Whoopsie. After all the rumors Benedict Cumberbatch would be playing Khan in Star Trek 2 and all the denials they weren’t reviving the character, Karl Urban might have just let the real cat out of the bag. In an interview with SFX while promoting Dredd, Urban outright named Cumberbatch’s villain and it’s a character true Trekkies will remember.
Read on, if you dare.
Okay are your ready? Here comes the spoiler-filled quote,
He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.
Gary Mitchell. Some of you might be scratching your heads but let me elaborate a little more and you’ll be going, oh yeah, that guy! Appearing in the second pilot episode, “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” Mitchell is a friend of Kirk’s from his Academy days who is assigned to the Enterprise. On a mission they encounter a galactic barrier that somehow imbues Mitchell with god-like powers. Which then corrupt him and turn him evil.
Of course, Mitchell’s inclusion has already been denied by screenwriter Robert Orci, but whatever, I’m holding out hope this rumor is true. Mitchell sounds like a fascinating antagonist for Kirk, one that will affect him personally and will cause his character to grow and evolve, just like Chris Pine mentioned. And, I believe Mitchell will be a far more interesting character to see rebooted, where the idea of seeing Khan again just sounded like retreading too much familiar ground.
What d’ya think? Would Mitchel make the perfect villain for Star Trek 2? Wouldn’t it just be awesome to see Cumberbatch as an, almost, invincible god?
