UPDATE: Shortly after this story ran, Variety got word that Will Yun Lee had been cast as The Wolverine‘s main villain, Kenuichio Harada a.k.a. the Silver Samurai.
Wait, maybe this movie will be good? It almost sounds like they know what they are doing. Sources close to the production of Hugh Jackman‘s awkwardly named The Wolverine have told ComingSoon.net/SuperHeroHype that the movie will cast non-popstar honest to goodness highly talented Japanese actors for roles in the movie.
Hiroyuki Sanada (Lost, Rush Hour 3, The Last Samurai) is set to play Shingen; veteran actor Hal Yamanouchi (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Push, Sinbad of the Seven Seas) plays Yashida; and new discoveries Tao Okamoto and Rila Fukushima will star as Mariko and Yukio, respectively.
Of course the movie will echo the classic Chris Claremont & Frank Miller four-issue 1982 series that featured Wolverine traveling to Japan to slice up ninja and really defined the character as more than just a furry death machine (while he still doled out the death). With the addition of Japanese actors to the cast, could this movie actually work? Could this be enough to wash away all the terribleness of X-Men Origins: Wolverine?
