There’s a lot of TV Series going the Fairy Tale route these days. Grimm. Once Upon a Time. Lost Girl (hey, it’s fable-ish). The genre is trending upwards. And why not? Fables and fairy tales rock! Show me one person who’s not a fan of old mother Hubbard and I’ll show you a fan with no imagination and care for pop culture. But I digress…
There’s another fairy tale classic making its way to the small screen. I’ll give you a hint: a silly blonde girl and a trolling purple cat are involved. Yep, you guessed it. Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland is getting retold. Again!
There have been numerous retellings of Alice’s adventures in Wonderland. So many, that another interpretation is kind of obnoxious. In this case, however, the re-imagining has already been told… in comic book form. The three comics Return to Wonderland, Beyond Wonderland, and Escape from Wonderland are all modern retellings of the Lewis Carroll story with Alice’s daughter taking the lead. I’ve never read it, but I hear it’s an excellent series. And sexy (see above art).
Lionsgate TV will be producing a television adaptation of the series by Zenescope. Brian Robbins of Smallville will executive produce the series and the search for a writer has begun. Robbins says that he’s looking for an experienced actress to play Alice with a relatively unknown actress playing her daughter. There’s no TV home yet for the series but Robbins thinks it would fit in well on broadcast of premium cable.
“There’s an opportunity to take something that has really great pre-awareness and spin it like we did with Smallville,” said Robbins
OK, so the guy from Smallville is doing a mature retelling of Alice in Wonderland. I’m sold!
