Live from Hall H, our Dev Richards will be live blogging all of San Diego Comic-Con’s biggest panels including Django Unchained, Man of Steel, The Hobbit, Pacific Rim, and Iron Man 3. Below is the blow by blow of what is going on at the Pacific Rim panel.
(2:34) Chris Hardwick is moderating. They have brought in more screens for the back to back to back Warner Bros. panels. First up is Pacific Rim.
(2:40) del Toro takes the stage and says that he is shitting his pants right now. Thanks fans for waiting in line and says that filming ended 12 weeks ago.
(2:43) del Toro says that after the Con PR will go quiet on the film until the end of the year.
(2:43) Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, and Ron Pearlman have arrived.
(2:45) Pearlman says that SDCC hasn’t lost it’s charm.
(2:48) del Toro says it is time to show some stuff. There are a pair of immense robots on the massive screens. They are called Yagers. That may not be how to spell that particular word.
(2:49) Each robot, or Yager, is controlled by one human. There is one robot per hemisphere.
(2:50) The trailer re-defines the term epic. Massive robots fighting massive monsters in a futuristic society. Hardwick asks del Toro how he did that, “That’s just the tip” he says.
(2:52) My editor texts me that we should have invested in the Torchwood style contact lenses so he can see. 3 minutes later del Toro says “all you James bond motherfuckers with cameras in your glasses, shut them off. This is just for you!” del Toro is a psychic!
(2:54) The opening shot of the trailer is a silent shot of two explorers in the snow. Large vibrations and the beeping of a metal detector begin. Then enters a huge fucking robot.
(2:56) Audience questions begin. Asked if we will be seeing giant, iconic robot weapons like drills and rocket launchers, Del Toro says there will be rocket launchers. Other epic weapons will be involved as well. He says expect an obscene amount of robot porn weaponry. I believe he means that figuratively.
(2:58) Asked how many different robots there are, how they’re different from the cliched robot fights in the past, Del Toro says there will be robot punches
(3:00) Charlie Hunnam says it was fantastic to work with del Toro. He took the part before there was even a script. He says del Toro works you hard, but he works even harder than he asks you too.
