Sam Raimi Logs Off ‘World Of Warcraft’ Movie

In the world of “News that no one really gives a crap about anymore” Sam Raimi is no longer set to direct the World of Warcraft movie.

Yes Virginia, someone actually planned to make a movie about that online game world . . . go figure.

The World of Warcraft movie has been officially in the works since 2007 and seemed to gain some steam in 2009 when Sam Raimi was attached to direct the film. He’d just finished the first two widely successful Spider-Man movies and he could pretty much write his own ticket on his next project. The honeymoon lasted until 2010 with pre-production writing and news bits about the movie that Raimi trickled out to the Internet quickly ran dry.

It soon became apparent that Oz: The Great and Powerful was Raimi’s go to project and while World of Warcraft fans may have held out hope that Raimi would return and finish, everyone else figured that Raimi and Activision would move on with their separate lives. Raimi confirmed this during an interview with Crave Online while at Comic Con.

“Actually, they don’t have me directing World of Warcraft anymore because when I took the Oz job, they had to move on to another director, they had to start making it.”

Activision Blizzard hasn’t stated publicly how their search for a new director is going or if they are even still considering the production. Is there a market for a movie about a waning online game? A majority of the gamers have moved on to new games and online worlds and Activision Blizzard admits that subscriptions are down.

Does anyone care anymore about this project? Did anyone read beyond the title of this post?
