The Avengers blew up the box office just a few months ago, Marvel has been in talks with ABC regarding creating a television series set in the Avengers universe a.k.a. Hollywood Marvel Land. And it’s apparently more a subset of the universe, really; according to Deadline, we shouldn’t expect to see the main superheroes on the show (if it happens):
I hear that the connection to the Avengers franchise would be light as the project is expected to be set in the universe and feature some of its themes and feel, but may not include any characters from Joss Whedon’s blockbuster.
/Film made a good point about this concept possibly following along the lines of the graphic novel Marvels:
In other words, this could be rather like the graphic novel Marvels, which retold the story of the early days of the Marvel Universe through the perspective of newspaper photographer Phil Sheldon. That focused in large part on the way that “normal” people live in their world inhabited by new superheroes, and since that’s also where the MCU is now, it could work as a beginning.
This project is still in its very early stages so who knows what will end up happening, or what their plan will be in the future. At the moment, they’re looking for a writer to try their hand at it.
This doesn’t come as a big surprise; we’ve speculated for some time that Marvel was wanting to expand into television, and it’s the natural progression for a corporation who wants to capitalize as much as possible on their stuff.
What do you guys think about this? Excited for more things to nerd about or irritated about the blatant capitalism going on here?
