The news from the Marvel NOW! re-something has been trickling out slowly since it was announced but today we have something sizeable (via IGN): the new Deadpool creative team is in place and it is, well, interesting. Comedian Brian Posehn (The Sarah Silverman Project) is taking over writing duties with Attack of the Show writer and fellow comic Gerry Duggan. Tony Moore will take time out from his lawsuit against Robert Kirkman to draw the book.
Now I know what you’re thinking: Lady Gaga‘s song “Poker Face” should have been called “Butter Face”, and you’d be right, but also Posehn and Duggan are a bit out of the blue, but they have worked on comics before, together on the short series The Last Christmas and Posehn most notably worked on the Goon noir anthology series so I’m sure they aren’t a completely ridiculous pick and sometimes good comic writers come from interesting places. Look at Tom Morello‘s Orchid, and Patton Oswalt‘s Firefly one-shot — point is, if you get an opportunity and you have chops, a respect for the medium, and an understanding of the character than you can go far, so maybe Posehn and Duggan will. Look at me being optimistic.
I can say this and be super calm about my favorite Marvel character falling into the hands of this trio because I wasn’t in love with Daniel Way’s tone after a while, so I am down for a change.
The new Deadpool ongoing is expected to start up in November, until then I’m goona go throw myself into my old Cable/Deadpool issues and the unjustly shit-canned Merc with a Mouth series and hope that this new series rises to that level.
Update: The always outspoken co-creator of Deadpool, Rob Liefeld took to twitter and created a bit of a firestorm by seemingly impugning some of the talent that have worked on Deadpool over the last decade. Check out his twitter stream for the whole thing but here are some highlights.
