Casting is continuing for the greatly anticipated Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire and we’ve just learned who’s playing one of the best roles. Famed theatre actress Lynn Cohen will be Mags, the 80-year-old victor from District 4 and heartthrob Finnick Odair’s mentor. Cohen’s screen credits include, “Steven Spielberg’s Munich and Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, NY, as well as as Sex and the City and its sequel.”
This might be slightly spoilery, but I’m sure when it comes time for Catching Fire trailers we’ll all be well aware of the basic premise. In Catching Fire instead of the usual Hunger Games, where young tributes from each district fight to the death, they hold the Quarter Quell, which is basically an all-star edition of the Hunger Games where past victors are chosen to compete instead of children.
For those unitiated here’s how Mags plays into all this thanks to The Hunger Games Wiki,
The female tribute from District 4, and Finnick’s mentor during the 65th Hunger Games. She is around 80 years old and volunteers to take the place of a young woman, Annie Cresta, to spare her from the Games. Mags is one of the first people Katniss wants for an ally, along with Beetee and Wiress, due to her overall kind personality. Katniss observed that she can make a fishing hook out of anything.
Basically, she’s wise, kind, and all sorts of awesome. Also a little senile and crazy, which only adds to the fun.
I really can’t wait for this film. Catching Fire takes everything you loved about Hunger Games and amplifies it. The Games are tougher, the competitors more skilled and deadly, and the stakes are even higher.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is set to release November 22, 2013.
