As we ease down from the surprise that yes indeed, there will be a Guardians of the Galaxy movie coming up in just two years time, we get news that a new writer will be taking a crack at the script. But what’s especially interesting is that the person writing the script anew is Chris McCoy, an accomplished, though unproduced, screenwriter.
So who is Chris McCoy? (Dammit Jim, he’s a screenwriter, not a miracle worker! Ha!) McCoy has had no less than three scripts on the so-called “Black List,” an annual list of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. You know, all the scripts Hollywood doesn’t produce so they can make Battleship and Total Recall.
McCoy’s scripts, Get Back, Good Looking, and Good Kids are each known for their “quirky comedic bent,” so perhaps McCoy is being brought in to add some character to the unique cast of Guardians which includes a talking tree and bad ass raccoon. McCoy will be replacing Nicole Perlman, who wrote the initial draft of the Guardians screenplay. Perlman came up in Marvels’ writer’s program, and has previously penned two real-life space films about Neil Armstrong and the Space Shuttle Challenger. So I guess Marvel’s trying to marry real space with quirky space.
The Guardians of the Galaxy film will feature a superhero team of alien heroes including Star Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, Groot and Gamora as they battle Thanos (the villain at the end of The Avengers) to stop him from taking over the universe. The film is scheduled for release on August 1, 2014.
