Yesterday there was the great news Joss Whedon would indeed return to write and direct Avengers 2 as well as help develop Marvel‘s new live action television series. Now, from an official announcement made late last night we’ve learned a few more details, the first being Whedon is locked in for a three year contract with Marvel, ending June of 2015.

As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.

Hmm, “contribute creatively” you say,” to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe,” eh? Their upcoming slate of films has already been announced (Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man) and I wonder what kind of input he’ll be contributing? I’m guessing he’ll oversee whatever over arcing storyline plays into The Avengers‘ sequel. What do you think? Add the fact he’s also helping develop their television offshoot of the Marvel cinematic universe, and it appears they’re giving him the keys to the castle. We’re all just living in Joss Whedon’s world, aren’t we?

I can only imagine orchestrating the next phase of Marvel’s movie and television properties is going to take up a lot of Whedon’s time, what does this mean for his other projects? What about those rumors of a Dr. Horrible 2? Of course, somehow Whedon found time to make Much Ado About Nothing while working on The Avengers, so I don’t know. He’s a wizard.

What are your thoughts about Whedon taking the reins of Marvel’s movie and TV future?
