As we wait for the piece of casting news we all really want, the identity of the actor who will bring Finnick Odair to life in The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, Lionsgate gives us another minor bit of casting news, but one that should catch the attention of the nerdy amongst us.
Actor Alan Ritchson has been cast as Gloss, a career tribute from District 1 and former victor who’s recruited for the all-star, 75th edition of the Hunger Games, which are central to the plot of Catching Fire. If you recognize Ritchson then you might be a fan of Smallville. Ritchson appeared regularly as the young Arthur Curry/Aquaman, one of Clark Kent’s first superhero allies.
Here’s the press release from Lionsgate:
Santa Monica, CA, August 9, 2012- Lionsgate® and the filmmakers of THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE are pleased to announce that Alan Ritchson has been cast in the role of Gloss in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel Catching Fire. A former Career tribute from District , Gloss and his sister Cashmere are both competing in the Quarter Quell.
Ritchson most recently starred in the CBS comedy pilot SUPER FUN NIGHT with Rebel Wilson, and BLUE MOUNTAIN STATE, which aired on Spike TV for three seasons.
THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.
THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE will be directed by Francis Lawrence, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the second in a trilogy that has sold more than 50 million books in print and digital in the U.S. alone.
Ritchson will join returning cast members Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Lenny Kravitz, and Donald Sutherland, along with fellow newcomers Jena Malone, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amanda Plummer, Lynn Cohen, Meta Golding, Patrick St. Esprit and Toby Jones, when Catching Fire starts shooting later this fall.
How about it, Bastards? Catching a fever for Catching Fire yet?
