It appears that Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch will chat your ear off about the experience of shooting Star Trek 2 with J.J. Abrams and the crew of the Enterprise Redux, but naturally, he isn’t going to tell you who he’s playing and whether or not they have some connection to Star Trek’s past.
Take this recent interview with Short List, who asked him point blank about his role in the next Trek film:
“Yep, it’s yet another thing I can’t talk about [laughs]. I’ll tell you this, it’s iconic and it’s exciting. I’m bored of denying that it’s Khan now, because people keep saying it.”
So does that mean he is playing Khan? Because saying that he’s “bored of denying” it can be taken a couple of ways. The rumor Cumberbatch is playing the genetically-engineered despot is the most persistent rumor about the new Trek film, but there have been other reports that Cumberbatch is playing Gary Mitchell, an Enterprise crew member and Academy friend of Capt. Kirk who goes Section 8 when he gets super-powers. There’s some dispute on that front too though as Mitchell was already introduced in the IDW comic, which is overseen by Trek screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.
But instead of clearing up the mystery, Cumberbatch continued his publicist approved, pre-arranged answer:
“[It's] really, really good fun. It’s a great part and it’s really well written. I enjoyed the fights and the stunts, there’s lots of that and it really is proper action movie territory… [It's] the stuff of dreams. I know it’s such a well-trodden, clichéd path, ‘Brit actor plays baddie in Hollywood’, but I channelled all of that and just really enjoyed it.”
More news as it…. Oh screw it! At this point I doubt we’ll know who the villain is even after the film opens. Which is May 17th, 2013, by the way.
