For many of us, last Saturday was a truly great day as Doctor Who returned for its seventh season to entertain fans worldwide. This 50th anniversary season is already looking like it could be the best yet, with a spectacular premiere that is (at least in the opinion of this Bastard) one of the best episodes that Steven Moffat has ever produced. The premiere was so anticipated, in fact, that it managed to break some BBC America records.
With an estimated audience of 1.6 million, Doctor Who – Asylum of the Daleks has become the BBCA’s single-most watched episode of a show ever. These numbers also put it up an amazing 23 percent from the premiere of season 6. It’s just more evidence to prove the fast-growing popularity of the show that has captured the attention of people all across America and turned us all, at least on a weekly basis, into the Doctor’s loyal companions.
And in other news, Matt Smith had the opportunity to speak his mind on a few subject via an interview with The Mary Sue. One subject came up that may be of particular interest to Who-watchers – that of the possibility of a female Doctor showing up in the future. Steven Moffat is all about it, barring the possibility of Smith sticking around for the next 50 years. Smith, although he likes the idea of switching genders, has a slightly different opinion on the subject:
I think there are many actresses that could play it because there are so many wonderful actresses. I mean, it would change the role because she would be a woman so when you put her in a room full of men, it’s a different scenario than if you put a man in a room full of men, because she’s a different sex. Would it change the fundamentals of the character? No. But it’s an interesting idea, if the Doctor’s a woman, does she have a Doctor baby? Is there a mini-Doctor? I don’t know, who knows? What actresses could play her? Oh gosh, so many, so many could play her. It depends on what age you would want. [He was really thinking hard here] It could be…Charlize Theron is pretty kick ass, isn’t she? They just have to find a brilliant actress. I never see that happening any time soon to be honest. I don’t think it will happen. [Because you’re not leaving us?] No. And I’m not turning into a woman.
Yup, it looks like Smith is going to be around for the duration. So unless he decides to have a sex-change or start cross-dressing, the closest we’re going to get to a female Doctor is in the speculation of a far-distant future. Of course, I’ll still be watching the show in another decade and no doubt most fans will be as well.
