Till now it was really just a rumor, although many of us in the fan community more or less took it to be true because of its sheer awesomeness, but James Gunn has said yes, he is directing Guardians of the Galaxy, and he’s also doing a re-write on the script. Here’s what the filmmaker said on Facebook (via /Film), finally confirming that he’ll be the man behind the camera on Marvel’s first space-based story:

“For a month or so there’s been a lot of Internet speculation about my involvement with Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ Until now I haven’t said anything, because I’m trying to be less expulsive about this project than I am about the rest of my life. But last night I got the go-ahead from Kevin Feige to let you all know that, yes, indeed, I am rewriting and directing ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’

As a lifelong lover of Marvel comics, space epics, AND raccoons, this is the movie I’ve been waiting to make since I was nine years old. Kevin, Joss, and all the folks at Marvel have been amazing collaborators so far, and we’re committed to bringing you something majestic, beautiful, and unique. I am incredibly excited. I am also incredibly grateful to the fans and the press for all their words of encouragement and support regarding my involvement with this project since the news first leaked. Thanks – you have, honestly, touched and overwhelmed me.

And that’s it for now. Other than the occasional photos of my dog and cat here on Facebook, I’ll talk to you again in August 2014 when ‘Guardians’ is released!”

‘Tis the perils of big budget Hollywood filmmaking I guess. It’s nice to get confirmation that Gunn is going to be writing his own script too for Guardians. Much like Joss Whedon and The Avengers, Gunn is too unique a voice to be merely employed as a hired gun and filming somebody else’s words. Gunn will be taking over scripting duties from first-timers Nicole Perlman  and Chris McCoy.

In other Marvel movie news, studio co-chair Louis D’Esposito offered some insight on the plans for Marvel’s Phase 2, the broad title for all Marvel movie projects staring next summer with Iron Man 3 and culminating with The Avengers 2 release in 2015.

In an interview with Cine Premiere (by way of Comic Book Movie), they began by asking  D’Esposito about the appearance of new characters (read: potential new Avengers) in the next group of films. (Forgive the nature of the quotes, their taken from the Spanish translation.)

“[W]e discussed it at the time and I think in The Avengers 2 [we] will see some new characters,” says D’Esposito. “We’re currently working on Phase 2 and we have Iron Man 3 , Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, so we returned to those franchises to enlarge them, but I think in The Avengers 2 will see one or two new characters.”

On the surprise choice of mid-credits cameo, Thanos: The Mad Titan, D’Esposito says that he was confident it would be a good hook for the audience, many of whom had no idea who Thanos was. “I think Thanos’ presence keeps the audience interested. At the end of Iron Man, many did not know who was Nick Fury and many wondered who the [guy with the eye] patch [was. It] serves to generate interest and from there you can go ahead and tell their stories.”

As for whether or Thanos will terrorize the Guardians or the Avengers in the not too distant future is not exactly clear. But D’Esposito says that Marvel’s working their plan. “In the development process we have many characters and stories [that] are always planning and a concept that we thought we could use and would be unsatisfactory. [We] decided to do it. [I don’t] think there’s a secret formula. As you know we have a Black Panther, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and more that we are developing and [we want them] all to be made, but [a] few [films] are made before others.”

Here’s the Phase 2 rundown of release dates (as if you didn’t already know).

  • Iron Man 3 – May 3, 2013
  • Thor: The Dark World – November 8, 2013
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier – April 4, 2014
  • Guardians of the Galaxy – August 1, 2014
  • The Avengers 2 – May 1, 2015
