Last week Doctor Who star Matt Smith drove nerdom wild by saying: “Let’s get Peter Jackson to direct one and go and make it in New Zealand. I would love to, I will campaign endlessly to come over and film there.” That “one” Matt was referring to is an episode of Who and while it sounds like he might just be a super-eager Tolkienista desperate to work with the man who gave us King Kong (and by extension, Jack Black in a dramatic role), it might actually happen next year.
Here’s the deal: Jackson is a fan of the show and he teased Smith right back telling him to name the time and the place, then Luthor creator Neil Cross set out to make this wonderful dream happen.
You see, Cross is friends with Doctor Who executive producer Caro Skinner, which means, like, they probably totes play Halo online together and Skype about Justin Bieber and stuff. Another benefit of their BFF-edness? Cross has generously offered to write a story that — given the chance — COULD be shot in Jackson’s backyard of New Zealand. Yes friends, it’s the epic Whovian tale of walking trees and elfin fantasy.
Skinner spoke up about the rumors with the Waikato Times saying:
“It is beyond wonderful that Peter is a fan of the show and it’s beyond flattering that he’d even think about it. I’m absolutely sure that we couldn’t afford him but, you know, we can always negotiate. His enthusiasm is just fantastic of course.”
The only set back of it all is that this collaboration would take place AFTER the 50th-anniversary celebrations:
“I’m with Matt [Smith]. Of course at some point we’d love to bring Doctor Who down under . . . it won’t be possible until at least a year after the 50th anniversary. We are already two-thirds of the way through the shoots of series seven and although we filmed a couple of episodes abroad I can confirm for the rest of series seven we will be shooting entirely in Cardiff Bay.”
The Times was quick to have point out that Steven Moffat and Neil Cross are in L.A. together this weekend because of the Emmy Awards. Steven as we know is the current Who show runner and Neil is currently writing an episode for the upcoming second half of season seven. Are the stars aligning for this explosion of nerdery to occur? Maybe, as long as both sides can come to some kind of agreement.
“Let’s see what those two very brilliant writers come up with whilst they are in LA. Rest assured that we are thinking about it. The landscapes and just the world of New Zealand is of course phenomenal and many movies are set in your beautiful country. It is also an extremely long way from Cardiff Bay so the logistics and the sheer scale of moving Doctor Who to New Zealand is something that would take an awful lot of planning and time.”
Let’s get #JacksonWho trending shall we? It’ll help push things along in the right direction, that or we could just get a Kickstarter together to buy Peter Jackson a plane ticket to Cardiff.
