It should come as no surprise really, after leading the first in Sony’s rebooted Spider-Man franchise to an astounding $751 million bank roll, it has been announced that Marc Webb will return to direct the webslinger a second time. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and, Jeff Pinkner are currently rewriting James Vanderbilt‘s script for the sequel and Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce. Before you ask, yes Andrew Garfield will be back as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and Emma Stone is currently in talks to return as Gwen Stacy. Filming is expected to begin in early 2013 with a release date of May 2nd, 2014.
In a statement Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, said:
“We could not be more confident in the direction we are taking this new Spider-Man storyline and we are tremendously excited to be ramping up production again with Marc at the helm and Andrew continuing on as Peter Parker. We can’t wait to share what we have in store for Peter and Spider-Man with audiences worldwide.”
Tl;dr version: Dude directs a reboot of a franchise that stumbled after it’s 3rd outing and it rakes in a tonne of money. Studio hires him back a second time. Studio starts making room for more money.
