Well folks, it’s official – Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has signed a director. And the winner is… Matt Reeves. You may all know him from his work on Cloverfield or Let Me In (the unnecessary remake of Let the Right One In). His star is rising, so to speak, and this will be a big step up, putting a giant budget and a hot property into the hands of the relative newcomer.
Rupert Wyatt was previously set to helm the film. Considering he directed the last one, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, it made perfect sense. Unfortunately, scheduling issues shut that down, so it’s up to Reeves. He’s been on the short-list for a while now and it was only a matter of time before someone gave him the thumbs-up.
The film is still in its early stages, the script being developed and casting in-process, but at least it’s moving forward. It should be interesting to see what Reeves can bring to the franchise. Let’s hope he brings something that doesn’t smell vaguely like a toilet.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is scheduled for a May 23, 2014 release, which also happens to be this Nerdbastard’s 40th birthday. This movie better be damn good and make up for the fact that I’m aging rapidly or I will have words with Mr. Reeves.
Thanks to /film for the heads-up.
