It is the 25th anniversary of the beloved fantasy classic, The Princess Bride and the cast and crew all celebrated by attending a screening at the New York Film Festival. They chatted a bit about what impact the movie had on them, related some stories from the shooting of the film and expressed their adoration of the devoted audience that still loves the film 25 years after its modestly successful release.
So what about making a sequel to the film? Some might say that would be a wonderful idea while others… well, we might be skeptical, to say the least.
Author William Goldman had a few things to say about the possibility of another story in the Princess Bride world. He says he would love to continue the tale, but doesn’t have the slightest idea how he would do it. Or, to put it in his own words:
I’m desperate to make it and write it and I don’t know how. I would love to make it, more than anything else I’ve not written.
Of course, the guy is 81 years old, so there’s not much time if he does decide to try to pen more. And good luck finding cast members for a sequel, since all the old ones are properly old now and Andre the Giant (may the Viking gods bless his soul) is no longer with us.
Personally, I’d be happy to dodge the sequel bullet on this one. Everything that needed to be said was said in the first. It had a beginning, a middle and a wonderful end and to add on to it for no other reason than franchising the title would be blasphemy.
What do the folks at home think? Would you watch a Princess Bride sequel? Is it even possible to make one, or would that just destroy the point of the original?
Thanks to /film for the good luvin.
