So Chronicle was quite the hit for 20th Century Fox earlier this year, so it would be little wonder that they’d want a sequel and in a manner equivalent to post haste. So what’s the hold up? According to Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis‘ dad, the legendary filmmaker John Landis, the studio is unsatisfied with the sequel’s recently completed script.
The scene was an AMPAS screening of the Landis classic An American Werewolf in London, and in the follow-on Q&A, Landis didn’t just dish about his own business, he also talked about his son’s. Courtesy of The Playlist, here’s what Landis Sr. had to say:
He wrote a sequel [to Chronicle], and it’s amazing, and the studio read it and said, ‘We want Chronicle again!’ And he said, ‘No, this is the sequel, it’s the evolution, and they said ‘No, we want that movie again!’ So it’s difficult, we’re dealing with a difficult business.
So Fox wants a carbon copy of Chronicle for Chronicle 2? Disappointing, but not surprising. Clearly, the same idea worked for The Hangover 2, but would anyone argue that Hangover 2 was artistically rewarding? (Or does anybody even consider Hangover 1 artistically rewarding?)
And yes, Papa John’s talking points got back to Max, and as the embarrassed son he now is, Max Landis had this to say on Twitter:
