All things super hero are up for grabs right now when it comes to developing money-making movie franchises.  Not all comic companies can own such massively popular titles as The Avengers, X-Men, Batman, Superman or Spider-Man, however.  But to each their own and one property that Valiant Comics is betting on is a series called Shadowman.

Shadowman is the protector of New Orleans, using his powers to battle against Master Darque and his forces of evil.  The comic has been fairly successful, selling millions of copies over its lifetime and spawning two video-game adaptations.

In charge of the Valiant project’s script will be J. Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5 fame.  In addition to his work on that fan-favorite, he also had a hand in crafting the Thor script and has been involved in comic book writing as well, from Amazing Spider-Man to Superman.

According to Straczynski:

Shadowman is a character who lives in a unique world that mixes the modern world with that which is most ancient within us.  The New Orleans vibe and history, and the struggle to find a balance with the personality within him, is a perfect dramatic vehicle. We’ve already finished the outline and there’s a lot of action, much of it unique to what Shadowman can do…but at the core of it, there’s a strong character, world and mythology that can be explored across multiple subsequent films. This is gonna be fun.

Multiple films, you say?  Yup, Valiant is hoping to turn this into a franchise.  In addition, they are also working with Sony to produce another of their titles, Bloodshot.  And though it may be an uphill struggle trying to face off against the Marvel and DC names, with someone like Straczynski on board, we may see great things from Valiant in the future.
