As we approach the release of the 23rd Bond film, Skyfall on November 9th, there’s already some whispered discussion about who will take over as 007 when Daniel Craig decides to leave. Granted, he’s signed on for two more film after Skyfall but in this industry it’s never too early to speculate. Who’s name seems to be at the top of a lot of lists? Idris Elba.
The actor’s been on a slow burn to super stardom. He’s appeared on HBO’s The Wire and starred in BBC’s Luther, both to high acclaim. We saw him as Heimdall in Thor, he was the captain of Prometheus in Prometheus, and soon we’ll be seeing him in Guillermo Del Toro’s giant robot movie, Pacific Rim. Things are looking really good for Elba, could a turn as the world’s most famous spy be next?
According to Naomie Harris, the newest “Bond girl” and Elba’s co-starr from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Elba’s chances may be better than most. He’s apparently already had a meeting with longtime Bond producer, Barbara Broccoli, as Harris told The Huffington Post,
I didn’t realize that there was this talk and then I did a film with Idris and he said that he met Barbara Broccoli and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond. And I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he’s a great guy.
Sure we don’t know when this meeting occured or how official it was, but it’s refreshing to hear they may be open casting the first black Bond. Though that’s not how Elba would like to be considered,
I don’t want to be the black James Bond. Sean Connery wasn’t the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn’t the blue-eyed James Bond, so if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.
In truth it shouldn’t matter at all what Bond’s race is as long as he can kick ass, woo women, drive a car, shoot a gun, bluff, and look impeccably good while doing it. I think Elba’s got all those qualities in spades. I mean, just look at him, could you deny the man anything? No, which is why he’d make an excellent Bond. I think even Dame Judi Dench would have trouble turning him down and that’s her damn job.
How would feel about Elba as the next Bond? If not him, who?
