Smaug Will Make a “Fleeting Appearance” in ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’, Says Jackson

This month’s Empire magazine is simply bursting with goodies, glimpses, and SPOILERS from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, releasing December 14th (as if you had forgotten). And while I haven’t yet gotten my hands on a copy, some of the most interesting bits of information have begun leaking online. The biggest being that yes, we will indeed see Smaug in the first movie, though Peter Jackson says only in a “fleeting appearance” during the prologue.

Will we hear him speak? Unlikely, I’m sure they’re saving the full effect of Smaug for the second flick since, y’know, he’s the title character at that point. Jackson continues with assuring fans Smaug will, “remain as liquid tongued as the book’s memorable villain (he is a character not a monster). And with their casting of Benedict Cumberbatch for the voice, I am sure we won’t be disappointed.

Jackson also shared the Mirkwood spiders have been moved into the second movie. They will also speak, but only through some kind of “psychic communication” only Bilbo will be able to hear. And finally, more confirmation of the Necromancer – an incarnation of Sauron also voiced by Cumberbatch – and his larger role in these films comes from the mentioning of his stronghold, Dol Gulder, said to appear in the second movie. Sylvestor McCoy, playing Radagast the Brown, even teases a wizard showdown with some mysterious enemy, likely the Necromancer, “where the wizards are together, battling not each other but some other evil.”

All this hype is driving me mad. There’s still seven weeks to go! And I’m sure these teases are only the tip of the promotional iceberg. Prepare yourself for two more months of Hobbit-this and Hobbit-that. It has only begun.
