The other day, we here at the NerdBastards (namely me) wrote a piece about Guillermo del Toro’s plans for upcoming projects. One thing on his list was a potential sequel for his latest flick, Pacific Rim. I say “potential sequel”, cause the first film still has about eight months before it hits theaters. Apparently, Legendary Pictures has said “screw it!” and plans to go ahead with the sequel regardless of how the film is going to do at the box office.
Screenwriter Travis Beacham has been asked to write up the new script. In case you don’t know, he’s the guy who did the treatment for the first one. He will, of course, be working hand-in-hand with del Toro. Assuming the director even has time to breath given his crazy schedule, that is.
So, folks, more giant robots are coming, whether you like the first movie or not. The problem is, most giant robot movies haven’t really done so well in the past. Then again, none of them have ever had such a great director and a huge budget. Let’s just hope they don’t turn this into a sequel factory in the manner that they’ve done with Michael Bay’s Transformers or we shall have one more mediocre franchise plaguing the world.
Thanks to GeekTyrant for the heads-up.
