When Game of Thrones returns next year (March 31st) expect to get a whole lot more than in previous seasons. HBO‘s hit drama based on George R.R. Martin‘s A Song of Ice and Fire book series is getting, basically, an episode’s worth of extra material! How, you ask? Well, each episode is expected to clock in a run time close to 56 or 57 minutes as opposed to the usual 52 minutes. Add that up for 10 episodes and that’s over 40 minutes of more Thrones. Plus, take into account the Season 3 finale will be over an hour long and you’re looking at, basically, an episode’s worth of extra material. Awesome!
Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss spoke with Entertainment Weekly about how they managed to pack in more for this season of Game of Thrones,
“There’s almost another full episode’s worth of extra minutes spread across the season,” Weiss says. “One of the great liberties with HBO is we’re not forced to come in at a specific time. We can’t be under 50 minutes or over 60, but that gives us a lot of flexibility.
“A super-sized season, as befitting Storm of Swords,” Benioff adds. “Last year we had a lot of 52-minute episodes. This year is a lot of 56, 57.”
“So for people clamoring for another episode, it’s in there,” Weiss says. “It’s just been cut into tiny pieces.”
Considering A Storm of Swords is the longest book of the series and it’s already being covered over two season instead of one, the news we’re getting even more is fantastic.
Only 103 days to go!
Oh! And to sweeten today’s news there’s been another ‘making of’ video released which shares more about Season 3, focusing on the art direction. Check it out,
