I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that Nick Fury is the glue that ties together the Marvel Cinematic Universe together. The head of the international peacekeeping force S.H.I.E.L.D. played by Samuel L. Jackson has appeared in five out of six of Marvel’s Avengers series of films so far, but did it occur to anyone that maybe Fury was ready for a movie of his own? The answer is a definite maybe.
In an interview with Coming Soon while doing press for Django Unchained, Jackson talked about the possibility of a Nick Fury solo film, or in lieu of that, how much Fury backstory we’ll get in the character’s next appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
“I think a lot of people know [Fury’s story],” Jackson said. “I know him as something else because I’ve been alive longer than most of the fans that watch the movies so I know Nick Fury as the World War II veteran and all that stuff. It might be interesting to do one day but we find out little bits and pieces about Nick and we’re going into Captain America 2 in late March.”
One thing’s for sure, Jackson, a dyed-in-the-wool comic enthusiast, sure loves playing the part. “Everybody likes a franchise character,” he said. “Bruce [Willis] had his and Sylvester Stallone had Rocky, so I like coming back to Nick Fury. Nick Fury’s a great guy.”
Anyway, it seems that for now any plans for a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie are on hold, I’m guessing because of the upcoming ABC series. Perhaps in Marvel Phase 3 we might get a peak at the man behind the eye-patch. We’ll keep you posted.
