With it’s chin-stroke worthy premise and backing of Scientology icon Tom Cruise, Sci-Fi film Oblivion is on the fast track to being one of 2013’s most visually impressive and interesting films. I can’t believe I just used the words “impressive” and “interesting” in the same sentence as Tom Cruise. This really must be the end of times…
Just recently director Guillermo del Toro offered a commentary track to the trailer of Pacific Rim. Following this trailer-commentary trend, is Joseph Kosinski.
Jim Vejvoda of IGN sat down with the Oblivion director for a scene by scene breakdown of the trailer; picking his brain for as much information as Kosinski would let out. The pair discuss everything from location of the film and it’s Northeast United States setting, to coy details on Jack Harper’s background and the “Scavs”.
What’s interesting is Kosinski’s inclusion of setting the film 60 years after an alien war on the planet, and the repercussions it held long after the war has ended. It’s rather intriguing. Check it out below:
Unlike most Sci-Fi films that capture audience’s attention with over the top action and visual effects, Oblivion seems to be able to blend action and substance seamlessly and effectively.
As long as Universal Pictures and Kosinski can keep the momentum going, Oblivion could very well be one of the next big hits for Tom and science-fiction fans.
Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Morgan Freeman, Melissa Leo, Zoë Bell and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is in theaters everywhere April 19th, 2013 with exclusive showings on IMAX starting April 12th, 2013.
