When movie fans saw the first ever image from Neill Blomkamp‘s Elysium, we were treated to Matt Damon looking far from the Jason Bourne action hero we know him to be. Bald, dirty and carrying a bad ass Chemrail gun in a mission against those who live on Elysium, a pristine man-made space station for the rich and powerful.
Seeing as Damon is the hero and looks like shit, you would expect his counterpart to be clean and well kept as he tries to eliminate the hero. Empire gives us our first look at Elysium‘s Kruger, played by District 9’s Sharlto Copley, and we see exactly what we didn’t expect. If you don’t believe me, take a look for yourself and see what I mean after the jump.
Honestly, when I first saw this image I didn’t think this was Copley – I thought this was Dolph Lundgren and literally had to check IMDB to be sure that the character wasn’t being improperly credited. Turns out it’s Sharlto all right, and he looks like a freaking ass kicker. A complete 180 from his appearance as Wikus van de Merwe in District 9, Sharlto shares a similarity to Matt Damon’s Max and his use of an exo-skeleton suit but unlike Kruger, Max probably stole his. The character himself looks like he’s someone who’s not on Earth to cause trouble, but rather to take care of the trouble – a definite threat for Max and his mission over the course of the film.
For now, Kruger has really been shown in this promo and this is his only known appearance outside of Comic-Con, but for now here’s Copley at this past Comic-Con talking to ClevverMovies about his development and the mindset of the then unknown Kruger.
