Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy needs a star to play Star Lord. Obviously. So then why the hell is Smallville’s Michael Rosenbaum auditioning?
Rosenbaum confirmed the news himself via his Twitter account saying…
Yesterday we learned that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was also up for the same role. Joel Edgerton (Zero Dark Thirty), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas), Lee Pace (Lincoln and The Hobbit), Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables), Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy), James Marsden (X-Men), and Sullivan Stapleton (Animal Kingdom) have also been mentioned as being up for the part.
Don’t get me wrong, Rosenbaum is a charmer. He’s charismatic and all around a very good actor. I’d certainly like to see more of him, but he’s not A-lister, he doesn’t have the star power to put asses in seats, nor is he convincing enough to play space pilot who ends up at the center of a universal conflict and becomes the leader of a eclectic bunch of superheroes.
I would suspect he’s being used to eliminate other choices.
I dunno if any of you bastards will admit to watching Say Yes to the Dress (Mrs. NB and I are getting married and she makes me watch it), but on that show, if a bride can’t decide on a dress, the shop owner will make her try on something outrageous to shock the system. The bride is so disgusted and confused that she instantly falls back in love with the earlier dress.
With all due respect to Rosenbaum, I think he’s that shock to the system.
Personally, I’d prefer someone like Warrior‘s Joel Edgerton. He’s a guy that’s tough on the surface but hides deep reservoirs of humor, decency and vulnerability. That’s someone I can believe in. There you have it Marvel. I made the decision for you. You’re welcome.
