The Call of Duty franchise has evolved over the years to become one of the biggest online multiplayer games of the modern day. So, naturally, we’d assume that Hollywood money-bags would want to cannibalize it and make a movie out of the title, no matter how horrible it might turn out. As it turns out, the owner of the COD line, Activision, says “NO!” to filmmakers’ nefarious plans.
According to Activision CEO Bobby Kotick:
CALL OF DUTY may look like a movie, but Mr. Kotick has little interest in turning it into one — and has turned down several studios’ requests. He says movies based on video games rarely please devoted fans and could taint the brand.
Holy crap! He gets it! Someone in power actually realizes that when you try to turn a video game into a movie it almost always ends up as a giant pile of suck.
And while I’m sure that there are probably three or four COD fans out there that will be crying into their pillows tonight, I’m still gonna call this one a victory for our side.
Thanks to /film for the heads-up.
