UPDATE: In an exclusive statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder’s spokesperson says:

“While he is super flattered because he is a huge fan, Zack is not involved in any way with the new Star Wars. He is currently in post on his two films, Man of Steel and 300: Battle of Artemisia.

Well, that sucks. I would have liked to see a Star Wars Seven Samurai.

Late last year, Zack Snyder was reported by the L.A. Times to have said he had no interest in directing Star Wars Episode VII, but perhaps he wasn’t letting everyone know what he was really hoping for, the opportunity to direct the first non-trilogy related Star Wars movie set in the Star Wars Universe.

Vulture is reporting that Snyder is developing a Star Wars project for Lucasfilm set in the Star Wars universe. The untitled movie is said to be loosely based on Akira Kurosawa‘s classic Samurai movie Seven Samurai. It’s a good fit for a Star Wars movie, the original trilogy was also loosely (Begin Nerd Fight over how loosely now) based on Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress. For those not familiar with Seven Samurai or it’s American western remake The Magnificent Seven:

A veteran samurai, who has fallen on hard times, answers a village’s request for protection from bandits. He gathers 6 other samurai to help him, and they teach the townspeople how to defend themselves, and they supply the samurai with three small meals a day. The film culminates in a giant battle when 40 bandits attack the village.

The story works well in the Star Wars universe, substituting Light Sabers for Samurai swords is a no-brainer. The movie would have to be set on a backwater planet and the rest of the seven warriors allows for multiple aliens and warrior types to be explored. I can see an older, retired Mandalorian fitting nicely into the mix.

What do you think about this news . . . or rumor until official notice is given.

what a load of sh*t… at least keep to the star wars theme and not use other material and turn it into a “star wars esq” thing.. could at least use somthing from the Legacy era in the time period
