Dwayne Johnson has made quite the name for himself outside the world of professional wrestling, but would you have ever expected him to play a god? Nearly a year ago Johnson was cast as the lead in Brett Ratner‘s Hercules, but then the project quickly fell silent. Now, as if by some miracle, the film has an official release date – August 8th, 2014.
Based on Steve Moore’s graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars, this imagining has Johnson starring as a mercenary who turns his back on the gods following the loss of his family. The mercenary, now training the armies of the King of Thrace, ends up having to fight the very soldiers he trained as they begin attacking the innocent they were sworn to protect. Set in the “real” world, the cast out son of Zeus will lack the supernatural elements that made him famous, but we can certainly expect plenty of action from Ratner.
Hercules is currently being adapted to the screen by Ryan Condal and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, will be produced by Ratner and Beau Flynn with Barry Levine overseeing the progress. The summer release date is perfect if the studio is looking for a franchise in the future and this could be a perfect long-term role for Dwayne. Comedy is well suited for the former wrestler, but it’s the action films that really bring in the bucks for him.
No reports on whether or not Kevin Sorbo has been asked to cameo, but with shooting possibly beginning later this year anything could happen.
