The flag of Comic-Book-Movie-Market-Domination (CBMMD) that Marvel has planted over the last few years (Right through the heart of everything DC except Batman) has put then in a position where they can pretty much do as they please and nobody’s going to say a word. Unless that involves re-shoots, then moviegoer fan boys and girls tend to trot out a litany of complaints for Shane Black and the Iron Man 3 production. Thankfully, it’s usually all for the better.
Last night in Hollywood the studio filmed a small series of re-shoots for Iron Man 3 at the TLC Chinese Theater, with plans on

“BLOWING UP THE THEATER.”
Featuring a crowd of extras, some well placed air cannons and lighting, the whole scene looks pretty cool and was shot from several different angles. Even when most effects are done by computers it’s still nice to see the work that goes into making a movie.
Our best guess is these re-shoots were mostly shot as B-roll footage to make up for something that was or wasn’t shot during the initial shooting schedule, but it could be for the studio’s recent IMAX announcement.
While the official release date is slated for May 3rd, the IMAX Corporation and Marvel Entertainment have announced Iron Man 3 will be digitally re-mastered for IMAX 3D and released into IMAX theaters internationally starting April 25th and domestically on May 3rd. This will be the fourth time a Marvel franchise film has been shown in the format, with the latest being last year’s record breaking The Avengers, and they’ve all done exceeding well in the film format.
According to Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment:
“Marvel and IMAX are a perfect one-two punch and the ‘Iron Man’ franchise has become a global phenomenon that resonates with fans around the world…We look forward to moviegoers experiencing this highly-anticipated next installment of Tony Stark’s latest adventures in IMAX 3D.”
Dave Hollis, Executive Vice President of Motion Picture Distribution for Walt Disney Studios is excited for the film saying that he and Marvel Studios are “thrilled to be able to offer that to fans in the larger-than-life action of IMAX 3D.” Why wouldn’t they be? IMAX does its best with their theaters to immerse you in the movie’s experience and sure, it looks weird to release it earlier on a separate film format, but that’s how things go. At least we won’t be waiting for much longer.
Iron Man 3, directed by Shane Black and starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley hits theaters in 2D, 3D, and IMAX theaters in North America on May 3rd, 2013.
