J.J. Abrams sure has a lot on his plate. Star Trek Into Darkness is releasing this summer, he’s been gifted the task of helming the first film in the new Star Wars trilogy, and then there’s the question of a third Star Trek film – how will he find the time? Speaking with Digital Spy, Abrams’ producing partner, Bryan Burk shed a little light on the future of the Star Trek film franchise.
We’re definitely talking about the next one, but we haven’t talked about a release date. We don’t want to wait four years, the same amount of time between the last one and this one, but is going to be a big year to celebrate, hopefully.
What’s the significance of 2016? Oh, only the 50th anniversary of Star Trek! And you know what a big deal a 50th anniversary can be, just take look at Whovian’s expectations. Having the third, and possibly final, Abrams’ Star Trek films releasing in 2016 is the perfect scenario. Whether it’s likely or not is another question.
2015 is still the rumored release date of Star Wars Episode VII, and while Abrams hasn’t publicly committed to that date he hasn’t refuted it either. Can he find the time to juggle both science fiction franchises and please the fans? Only time will tell.
Star Trek Into Darkness opens May 17th.
