In the months since the announcement of Star Wars Episode VII, the nerd-based media has asked everyone with even the flimsiest Star Wars connection whether or not they know if Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are returning for the new film: Have they been asked, who asked them, and what did they say when they asked?
Well, here’s something semi-official from Disney CEO Robert Iger. While appearing on CNBC’s Closing Bell, Iger set the record straight-ish in terms of Star Wars’ big three
A lot of talk around Star Wars, particularly the old cast, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher. Are they going to reunite?
Well George Lucas was quoted as saying that they would, but we haven’t made any official announcement yet. We’ve got a team working on the film right now, J.J. Abrams is going to direct it, we’ve got a writer named Michael Arndt who’s actually writing the script, working with some of the folks that were involved in some of the earlier films. When the story is quote unquote broken we’ll make decisions about the cast and we’ll move from there.
Is this something that you’ve been talking to them about already?
Talking to the actors? Yes, there’ve been discussions already.
So officially they’re talking, but unofficially they don’t know if there’s anything to talk about yet. Reassuring. Of course, they’d have to be crazy not to want to talk to Hamill, Ford and Fisher, but Disney’s walking a fine line because they don’t want to tip their hand without a script, or before the film goes into pre-production. I remember the crazy, rampant speculation about The Phantom Menace that preceded production on that film, and I’ve got to say I don;’t blame Disney at all for keeping their cards close to the chest.
More news as it develops.
