This latest bit of news is for the Game of Thrones fanboys and girls. If you’re one of those people that spurges out over details, you may have to sit down for this one. You have been fed nothing but lies for the last two (and current) seasons of the show. At least where it concerns the proper pronunciation of a particular word – Khaleesi.
Not that it matters much to the rest of us, but the guy they hired to put together the Dothraki language is a little tweaked about it being said wrong for the last three years. David J. Peterson, founder of the Language Creation Society, put together a lexicon of nearly 4000 words for the Dothraki, not to mention another pile of made-up language for both High and Low Valyrian.
So, what is the correct pronunciation? According to Peterson, it’s actually “KHAH-lay-see” and not the “ka-LEE-see” that we’ve been hearing.
Or, in Peterson’s own words:
Ugh. God. That’s not how it’s supposed to sound. The vowel change bugs me.
The producers decided they liked the other way better. They probably thought most people were pronouncing it that way anyway, which is true.
Oh well. Win some, lose some. At this point it certainly isn’t going to change.
Thanks to blastr for the heads-up.
