JJ-Abrams-Star-Wars-Episode-7

Good news for those among the SW fandom who are less than thrilled that Star Trek rebooter J.J. Abrams is helming Episode VII (and could potentially be brought back for VIII and/or IX). The director has stated unequivocally in an interview on MTV‘s Rough Cut (below) that he has no interest in pursuing any Star Wars-related projects other than Episode VII:

News of possible spinoff titles centered around Han Solo and Boba Fett broke not long after it was revealed that a new trilogy was in the works. Looks like if and when such films are made, Episode VII producer and new Lucasfilm Prez Kathleen Kennedy will be in the market for new directors.

Here are Abrams‘ exact words regarding potential spinoffs at this point (at least as far as he’s concerned):

“We’re focusing right now on [making ‘Episode VII’] because this movie feels like this is the one that has to work for anything else to work.”

“There are discussions about what would happen later [after ‘Episode VII’] and how to make this thing and to tell [that] story, you can’t look at it in a binary way. It’s obviously part of something much greater. To talk about those off-shoot films, that’s something [you] have to talk about with Kathleen Kennedy.”

Star Wars: Episode VII is due to begin production early next year, and scheduled for release in May of 2015. No information is available as of yet regarding any proposed spinoffs.
