Whedon on ‘Avengers 2’: Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver Won’t Make Things Easier, Iron Man’s Future, & Connections With ‘Agents of SHIELD’
Joss Whedon has the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the palm of his hand. Sure, he only made one of the five films from Phase 1, but his film, The Avengers, is their crowning glory. He’s now working on The Avengers 2 as well as Marvel’s first ever television series, Agents of SHIELD. What future does he see for the MCU? And how will new characters affect it?
We know Scarlet Witch and her twin brother, Quicksilver – note, also Magneto’s kids, though mention of that may be prohibited due to FOX and their claim to the X-Men – will be included in The Avengers 2, but don’t expect them to sign up for the team right away. Whedon told IGN,
You know, they had a rough beginning. They’re interesting to me because they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn’t necessarily agree with The Avengers. So they’re not there to make things easier. I’m not putting any characters in the movie that will make things easier.
Check, any new characters appearing in Avengers 2 will likely be adversaries before they become allies. Are we looking at one group of supers versus another? Or will there in the end be a threat large enough to unite them all?
And speaking of the team [IRON MAN 3 SPOILERS UPCOMING], how about their de facto leader, Tony Stark? He went through hell at the end of Avengers, and we see those experiences lingering during Iron Man 3. So much so, come the end of the flick he’s ready to swear off the superhero biz all together.
Well, I feel like in Iron Man 3, even though he said, ‘I’ve changed’ — he blew up his remote suits, but I don’t think anybody thinks he doesn’t have one anymore. The question is, if The Avengers are called, does he show up? And the answer is, ‘Yes!’
There would be no Avengers without Iron Man, at least in the MCU anyway. Lastly, what of SHIELD? How will we see Agents of SHIELD reflect the events of the MCU? Speaking with TV Fanatic, Whedon said,
We’re absolutely on top of all the movies. We never contradict, replicate – we will be flowing in between them, maybe occasionally we’ll throw something in that foreshadows [or] echoes but we’re very much beholden to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
That’s right, we’ll be watching a little chunk of the MCU every Tuesday night once Agents of SHIELD begins airing this fall on ABC. What little teases do you think we’ll see included in SHIELD? And how about Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver? Friends or foes?
